Hello
Happy to be here.
I have been having a problem with vista as it appears many others have had.
Windows explorer keeps restarting. I would like to know if anyone has an answer on fixing this problem or can guide me in a direction on how to fix it

Re: Windows Explorer continous restart on Vista
Hi All, Pleas try this..

it has done the magic for me

If you have Internet Explorer Crashing, here’s a sure-shot fix!
1.Click the Start button at the bottom left of your screen
2.Click the Control Panel menu item
3.Then double-click the System icon.
4.Click the Advanced tab
5.Performance > Settings.
6.Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
7.You'll see two options in that window click the second option that says "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select."
8.Then click the 'add' button it should be visible at the bottom of the box. Find where the file 'explorer.exe' resides on your computer. (c:\windows\explorer.exe) Add explorer to that list. It'll give you a warning just ignore it and click ok. Reboot. Issue resolved J

Figured it out
There is a program called "Trojan Remover"

Download Trojan Remover 6.6.1 Build 2483 [UPDATE] Free Trial - Trojan Remover - aids in the removal of Trojan Horses from a computer - Softpedia

I ran this while the problem was happening, it was tricky but I got it to install (had to move the fingers quickly b/c you know how it restarts the explorer screen every 5 seconds...but once it installed and scanned it errored out and I restarted the program ran it again and it stopped the loop and removed the trojan that causes it.

THIS IS FROM A PREVIOUS EMAIL AND IT WORKED A TREAT. PLEASE TRY THIS BEFORE RESTORING OR REINSTALLING OS. SOMETIMES IT IS THE SIMPLEST THINGS THAT CAUSE THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS. IF YOU CAN'T GET TO INTERNET OR OPEN FILES IN NORMAL MODE TO GO TO SAFE MODE. DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE AND IF THE MESSAGE STILL APPEARS WHEN YOU TRY TO ACCESS YOUR FILES THEN USE THE TASK MANAGER AND GO TO FILE, NEW TASK. OPEN THE PLACE IN C:\ DRIVE YOU PLACED THE DOWNLOAD AND OPEN IT FROM THERE.

HOPE THIS HELPS, I WAS SO CLOSE TO RESTORING EVERYTHING AND LOSING ALL MY FILES.

Re: Windows Explorer continous restart on Vista
Here is another solution I Tried that solved the windows explorer loop problem.

I spent at least 4 hours trying everything and searching the web for answers, it turned out that i had a problem with a codec named mpegsplitter.ax

Here is what i had to do solve the problem open CONTROL PANEL(you should use your task manager to open the panel), click on FOLDER OPTIONS, click on the VIEWS tab, check the box for ALWAYS SHOW ICONS, NEVER THUMBNAILS (it should be the very first box on the top), and hit APPLY. Thats it problem solved at least for me the only thing is you have to be pretty quick because the FOLDER OPTIONS window will close every single time windows explorer restarts. Hope this helps someone out.

Re: same here
I Googled "windows explorer continually needs to restart" and it brought me to this forum.

I don't see a "fix" for this issue yet? Is it still too new?

I've not had a problem until recently. I haven't made any changes to my computer, but I suppose Vista has automatically updated. So is it an update that is causing this problem?

It's annoying to have the desktop go blank and Windows Explorer restarts. It doesn't seem to be for any reason.....just because. It can happen at anytime.

Re: Windows Explorer continous restart on Vista
I Googled "install Service Pack 1 for Vista" got a microsoft webpage, installed it, except I got this error message and it sounds ambiguous to me.

The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.

Well, if Service Pack 1 is the correct upgrade patch (because I don't show it being on my computer) and I DO HAVE VISTA, then this error message is very ambiguous. The program to be upgraded can't be missing, because I'm looking at it: Vista on a Sony Vaio computer.

Back to square one. Ugh.
