windows explorer has stopped working
I really regret having chosen a laptop with Vista installed for travelling (I live in Hong Kong and I have to move to LIsbon for about 6 months) instead of a Macintosh. In 15 years of working with Macintosh i never had a problem with installation, a virus or some other problem.

My new COMPAC HP Presario B1200 came with Vista system installed. First it cames with a terrible version of Office 2007- All the set up for word or excel has changed, very difficult to work with.

Finally yesterday the windows update asked me to download some update but I have to choose between two versions, one for 32 bit or another for 64 bit. Really i dont understand why it cannot check automatically the version that is compatible with the system I have!!?? Are the puter becaming less inteligents? Well, After downlading and installing the version that looks more compatible it asked me to restart the computer and I did. SURPRISE - I am getting a random message saying WINDOWS EXPLORER HAS STOPPED WORKING any time i restart the computer, and I can't see the desktop icons or the toolbar.

Can I get someone help me to make it working properly?

Why Microsoft Vista doesnt have an online version to repair instead of testing a new program update that compelitely crashes your system???

I really miss my Macintosh. PC with Vista is a frustration...

Re: windows explorer has stopped working
I am VERY new to Vista but have over came some problems already.
I hope you did a back-up soon after you got your computer setup.
I had to back-up mine the same day as I did my first saved backed-up due to some over clocking program. Came back working fine and has since.

If not you may be able to use your install disk and repair the system.

I hope this helps some.

Hi, I 'Googled' your problem and here is one of the possible answers:
Invision Power Services > Explorer keeps crashing You'll have to scroll to the bottom of the page to get the answer. Hope this helps.

Re: Windows Explorer continous restart on Vista
I notice that this is by far one of the most comment problems people are having. So I've merged a bunch of threads on this subject into one and it is sticky'd for now.

So for this issue please do not start a new thread, but instead post here if you are getting the "Windows Vista has stopped working." error message frequently.

Also here is the Microsoft Knowledgebase article for this problem, which doesn't have much info but may be useful to someone:

Error message when you log on to Windows Vista: "Windows Explorer has stopped working"

Thank you!

Hi guys,

Go through thi link.. it really helped in solving the pwoblem with windows explorer..

Error message when you log on to Windows Vista: "Windows Explorer has stopped working"

Also you can rename the shell files using a software called shexview. I am looking for the download link for the same, as soon as i get it, I will post it in this thread..

Have Fun...

Re: Windows Explorer continous restart on Vista
I finally solved the problem. I uninstalled all the extra codecs I had in the computer and explorer stoped reinitiating.

The strange thing is that those codecs worked fine, not issuing a single problem for 2 months!

Re: Windows Explorer continous restart on Vista
I was able to partially solve my problem, by opening Internet Explorer, you have to open it very quickly in the loop, right after the desktop comes back up.

Type C\ in the address bar and it gave me a log of my last activity by date. I went to the date I started having problems and highlighted and deleted the files I had downloaded around that day.

When I closed the internet explorer the loop had stopped.

The only problem was when I opened the recycle bin to completely delete the file it affected that for one loop.

I am now at least able to use the computer, But does anyone know another way to empty the recycle bin?
