windows audio has stopped working
so, i have a gateway notebook model mx8734. it's three months old.

everything was fine until last week, when my itunes suddenly quit playing my music. the track numbers wouldn't progress and there was no sound, though it said it was playing.

then my windows media player decided to quit as well, telling me it didn't have access to the files so i therefore couldn't play them, which is a lie.

i've read through a few forums and tried uninstalling/reinstalling itunes, the usual reboot, etc. all of my drivers are updated, including my audio device. after reading this forum, i downloaded the audio device associated with my computer, and now my computer at least recognizes that there is a problem, and that i have no audio.

in the bottom right corner it says 'windows audio has stopped working'. when i tell it go to online to find a solution, it does nothing. my audio device says it is enabled, but will randomly quit running, even though it is updated.

THIS PROBLEM IS DRIVING ME NUTS. is there something i haven't tried that someone could help me with? PLEASE.

No audio Output device is installed
I recent had this problem and also had the red X on the sound icon. I uninstalled the Sigmatel audio device driver from my Inspriron E1505 and then just downloaded the device again from Dell. That seemed to fix the problem becuase i now have sound, hope this helps.

Thanks
I used your tip in screen #8 and it worked like a charm on my HP Notebook.
I too, had the dreaded red x on my speaker icon. Your tip worked great the first time I tried it after fooling around trying other tips for 3 hours. I reccomend you try this the first time. then go on to other tip if it doesn't work. Thanks again!!!!! Debbie

I have the same problem with my vaio notebook. everything was fine until I plugged a headphone/mic from Logitech into the usb port. Now I get the "no audio output intalled" message as well. The red dot dissapears when I plug the usb mic/headphone back in. so I only get sound via the headphones now...

Fix for the "No Audio Output Device" issue

> Control Panel
> Programs
uninstall SigmaTel Audio

> C: Drive
> Windows
> Drivers
> Audio Driver (SigmaTel)
> click "Setup" (Application) to re-install driver
