Found a fix as well
Had the exact same issue with my Gateway after an upgrade to Vista Ultimate.
Tried reinstalling the driver with no success. I contacted the gateway tech support and we finally got it by going to the Device Manager, under the Sound device tab right click on your device and select uninstall device then CHECK the box "uninstall driver" box => the device disappear.
Next restart or right click on the on the device manager tree root and select 'Scan for new hardware" => Vista found the sound device, installed the driver automatically (didn't have to). The device showed up under a different name and sounds started playing again.

First uninstall the sound drive by going to device manager and click on sounds. Then click the device tab and click uninstall. Then restart your computer.

Then go to Sony eSupport - Electronics and click on software and ers. Then type in your model number and on the next page click "original". Then look for "SigmaTel® High Definition Audio CODEC" and download and run it. Then restart your computer and your audio will work fine.

Thanks I have a Dell laptop and after upgrading to Vista home premium, I lost sound. Followed your instructions (after doing lots of other unsuccesful things as advised by microsoft) and everything now works fine.
