I have installed it on my laptop to see how effective it is compared to a "paid" product.

Some of the free products out there can be surprising. Look here at the overall benchmarks for anti virus. Notice the first three are free releases! (Avira jumps out at you)

I see the tests don't include the latest version of AVG as they were performed in October of last year but still interesting stuff..
