Re: random lockup on games
What is your sound card exactly? Everything else looks in order apart from, as you mention, the sound driver.. What about chipset drivers? Also cooling may need looking at but thats a long shot.
Also does this 'lock-up' happen with every game or just one in particular?

Hi MHolloman1

I have found similar problems amongst various forums linked to:

ctaud2k . sys process

The process Creative WDM Audio Device Driver belongs to the software Creative Audio Driver (WDM) by Creative Technology Ltd (Creative Labs : Home Page - The leader in Digital Entertainment for your PC and the Internet).

You can find posts on the link below regarding what was done to solve it:

Message Search - Creative Labs

It might also be worth trying to look for updated drivers!!!

Re: random lockup on games
Hi, they've just released a new set of drivers:
Customer Support: Downloads
You could try what you suggest with your mobo although if it's disabled in the bios it should be ok. I'm intrigued why your getting the lock-ups after 2hrs and not before. So please provide the following info...
What game does this happen in?
Does it happen when playing any other game or is it 'exclusive' to one game only?
If it's only happening in one game then I'll bet that it's the graphics driver but anyhow let me know the above..

Re: random lockup on games
My problem appears to be the same, here's what happens with mine. My Desktop is 100% stable as long as I don’t play games, I can run it for weeks Video encoding nonstop, but when I play games it will crash randomly locking up my PC till eventually the display turns off, this can happen after 30mins or several hours, and seems to happen more often if there is Internet activity at the same time (i.e. Downloading). All the event logs show is "unexpected shutdown".
My Specs are:
EVGA 680i SLI Deluxe motherboard.
Intel E6600 Dual Core (tested stable at both 2.4 GHz and 2.92 GHz in memory diagnostics, and video encoding / 2D stuff).
OCZ2N9002GK Dual Channel Kit (2x1024MB, 900MHz, DDR2).
Hyper Type M 730watt PSU.
MSI 8800GTX 768MB PCI-E 16x OC Edition (Engineering Pre-Release BIOS, i cant find an updated one anywhere).
Samsung DVD-ROM & RW.
Antec Gaming 900 Case.
I have tried both Vista Home Premium versions the 32bit and 64bit made no difference. I bought my PC when the GTX card was the fastest one out there costing me a colossal amount of money at the time, and I have never been able to play games on it. I am going to give up on the PC as a gaming platform now if I can’t find a solution to this.

Re: random lockup on games
Thats still an awesome card and probably as almost as fast as anything you could presently buy.. So games should be no problem at all! How are you for temps? Does it happen to every game you play or ones in particular?
I just have to ask though.... Did you plug in the extra power cables the card needs?

Re: random lockup on games
My temps are all acceptable as far as I’m aware; the Antec Gaming 900 case is well ventilated. Both power connectors are in place, I have tried flashing the Motherboard BIOS and using the latest drivers. I have had this problem with Bio Shock, and Crysis most noticeably with Stalker constantly crashing to the desktop more than totally locking up the PC as with the other two. Nothing except WOW would play on this without locking it up which is weird. It seems that Vista's DirectX 10 is at fault, or it’s when I’m pushing the system / graphics card too hard. I'm totally lost as to what to do next with this PC; any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: random lockup on games
Hmm....thanx for the info. Do you have SP1 installed? This contains many fixes to the problems you describe... Also, which drivers have you tried? You also say you flashed the mobo bios... Is that to the latest revision?

Hi Rarefiedgrit

Have a look at the link below regarding the cooling system of your motherboard.
As Kemical has suggested, temps. are important when overclocking has taken place. Although you say the temps. are o.k. and the case is well ventilated you need to get some figures to check that out.

Note the special chipset cooling fan in the link below:

Its worthwhile looking through all this review as it mentions cooling systems in detail!!!!!
